It’s Saturday evening and I’m standing in a car-park in east London. As the traffic screeches past, under the glare of the nearby Texaco garage, I’m trying to decide what to have for dinner. But there’s not a microwave meal in sight for me tonight: I’m at London’s newest night market, Urban Food Fest. And I’m very, very hungry.
The car park is crammed with hoardes of hungry people. In a central space they sit on flimsy stools at packed tables. Talking, laughing, eating. Around the edges are a dozen or so stalls, each one emitting its own uniquely delicious smell. There’s a Korean stand offering up ramen and rice burgers. The inevitable burrito stand (hey, it’s a classic) plus pulled pork, Byron burger, hot dogs, Indian street food and more.
My eyes flicker over each new stand until I alight on something extra special: handmade scotch eggs from the boys at Scotchtails. There are four varieties encompassing everything from black pudding to chorizo. I choose the classic, with sweet potato fries and salad for £6.50. It’s fucking amazing. Go try it.
